Coenzyme Q10, also commonly known as ubiquinone or ubiquinol, is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like compound present in nearly all animal body cells. Coenzyme Q10, as its name suggests, is a coenzyme that plays a vital role in cell respiration; the process by which the cell produces energy. CoQ10 is found in the cell mitochondria and acts as an electron carrier in the electron transport chain respiration process.

Every electron pair involved in the cell respiration process must first be activated by Coenzyme Q10 – it is this interaction that ‘sparks’ the chain and starts the energy-making process. There is no alternative or replacement substance for CoQ10 and without this coenzyme the cell would not be able to produce the energy needed to perform its basic functions.

The body produces CoQ10 naturally, however this production level, as well as general energy levels, tend to decline with age. Many people often turn to other, external sources of CoQ10, like food and supplements, to try and keep their levels high. But what exactly are the benefits of adding an extra spark of Coenzyme Q10 into your life?

Energy production

Given its main function as a vital component of the energy-producing cell respiration process, it comes as no surprise that boosted energy levels and a decrease in fatigue is a major benefit felt from sustained CoQ10 supplementation.

Unlike caffeine, which exerts its function in the brain, CoQ10 operates within the body cells to naturally increase energy levels. The subsequent crash and loss of energy after having caffeine is due to the temporary effect these type of stimulants have on your energy levels; as the substance is metabolised and excreted by the body the associated vitalising feelings also disappear.

Antioxidant power

CoQ10โ€™s reduced and active form, ubiquinol, is a powerful antioxidant that is able to donate its free electrons to the highly reactive free radicals and prevent the oxidative damage that they cause. This free radical-caused oxidative stress is thought to be responsible for a host of health conditions and diseases including heart disease and diabetes.

The oxidative damage caused by free radicals is also thought to play a major role in the ageing process and antioxidants have claimed anti-ageing properties, like keeping skin looking fresh and rejuvenated.

Link Nutritionโ€™s Food Based Energy + CoQ10 supplement is a natural additive and preservative-free way of getting your daily Coenzyme Q10 fix. Their energy blend contains vitamin C, B vitamins and Siberian Ginseng extract as well as CoQ10 for an all-round vitalising and fatigue fighting energy boost that goes above and beyond.
