Turn to beauty

With dark news, in these darkening days, be mindful of where you head turns, where your eyes look, where your ears tune.

A diet of horror, of despair and dismay weakens you without strengthening those suffering most and leaves you feeling overwhelmed, unable to help or act or even think you can.

Instead, moment by precious moment,  give thanks and turn towards beauty because we still can. Because when we rest our fractured, fragmented nervous system, or mind calms, our brain settles.  Let your mind drift to damp clouds, low light, warm fires and candlelight. Notice what you have rather than what you miss and from this…

…will come calm, quiet, rest. As your mind stills, and your attention is free to roam away from news and screens and phone, then, in those small moments, then is when the ideas of how we might make a difference, might help, might speak out, use our skills arise.

‘The only way out is in’ said Thich Nhat Hanh, it is a circular thing. When we step of the merry-go-round of bad news, angry views and go within, we calm, we ground, we feel better, we notice with gratitude all that we have, and then, we  have the energy to go into the world and make positive change. And when we do a good deed, however invisible, however small, it is good for us and not just the world. We produce oxytocin and serotonin, which counter the cortisol of stress, soften our heart quite literally and improves our health. Win – win.

So step away from dark news and dismay and instead turn to beauty every day.

Julie Leoni

Coach, author, podcaster, facilitator, Yoga and psychology teacher, learner

I have over 30 years of experience and qualification in various therapeutic and meditation/mindfulness based approaches. I work with change. Some changes we chose, others happen to us.  Sometimes we know we want to change but don't know how. Sometimes we don't want to change but external events or people are forcing us to change. The menopause, children leaving home, the end of a relationship or job, becoming a parent, coming out, bereavement are just some of the personal changes I support people with. I also work with people who want to make changes to their life and wider world in response to social issues such as Covid, the climate crisis and racial, sexual and gender inequalities. Times are changing whether we want them to or not and we need to be nimble, agile, curious and open in order to part of the new story emerging. Work with me to get clear on what matters to you, what makes your heart sing and what kind of future you want for yourself and those you love. It is possible to live differently, get in touch to explore how.
