A cosy stay in the Yorkshire countryside

The Yorkshire Dales boasts a beautiful blend of mountains, wild waterfalls and stone-built villages and farmland. Well-known as the backdrop of the Calendar Girls, the scenery is striking and instantly recognisable.

I stayed at The Annexe, a converted barn apartment with beautiful views, modern luxuries and a quiet setting. Located in Jervaulx, near Ripon, the cottage is on the edge of the Dales and within easy driving distance of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, stunning walks and peaceful landscapes.

Well equipped with a plush bathroom, pool table, electric piano, wood burner and plenty of space indoors and out, the cottage makes an ideal, quiet base and is also dog-friendly. Many walking guides, maps and leaflets are also provided โ€“ a must for us.

The Annexe is set in the grounds of the Old Hall, where a short pathway leads you to Jervaulx Abbey, a ruined Cistercian monastery. With pretty gardens and lovely views, this is a great spot to start a walk or enjoy a picnic.

Keen walkers, we first head out to Aysgarth Falls on the River Ure. The view here is stunning, and an easy trail leads you to the lower and upper falls. We scramble down the rocks and explore more before following the four-mile marked route across the fields to Castle Bolton where weโ€™re rewarded with views across the Dales. After the walk back, we retreat to The Annexe for a homecooked dinner.

Walking and driving through Wensleydale and the Dales, the landscape is so peaceful and diverse. A highlight is climbing Whernside, the highest mountain in Yorkshire. We start the walk at Ribblehead, an impressive Victoria viaduct at the foot of the peak. The path is well-marked and, after a steep climb, the summit affords us with beautiful views โ€“ followed by rain and a rainbow!

Having had a taste of Yorkshire, weโ€™re keen to explore more and will definitely be returning. With everything you need and a cosy welcome, The Annexe is a great base for doing so โ€“ particularly for the East of the Dales, Nidderdale and Wensleydale.
