How to Stick to Your Goals
Setting goals is often the start of an exciting journey of change, but what happens if you start to lose momentum? Here I share 3 tips to help you stay on track.
You’re feeling energised, committed, and raring to go. You’ve set your goals and now you’re ready to put them into action.
But fast forward a few weeks down the line, and how are you doing?
It’s sometimes difficult in our busy lives to feel as committed as we perhaps did at the start of the process, and even though the want and intention is there, we find ourselves losing site of the goals.
So many people fail to achieve their goals, but with the right strategies in place, it really doesn’t have to be this way.
Here are 3 quick tips to help you keep that momentum and actually realise those goals:
Write them down
A study done by Dr Gail Matthews, a psychology professor at Dominican University of California, showed that by simply writing your goals down increases your chance of achieving them by a whopping 42%.
When you write your goals, I recommend you also really think about the meaning behind the goal. For example, capture WHY you want to lose weight/start meditating/get up an hour earlier each day?
By giving them meaning they will become more tangible, eg; HOW much weight you want to lose, and by WHEN? How regularly will you meditate, and for how long? Or what do you need to put in place in order to get up an hour earlier each day, and what will you gain from doing this?
If you have a journal, or somewhere you can capture your goals and access them easily, commit to writing these out today!
One last tip on this. If you can, then I would recommend re-writing these goals out daily or at least weekly, in order to reaffirm in your mind what you’re committed to and where you want to get to.
Vision/Action Board
There are many things written about the power of vision boards, and there are those who don’t buy into them because it might seem a bit “out there” or too much of a faff, but I would urge you to give it a go. They really do work!!
I have mine on the wall by my bed, which means those powerful images that I’ve chosen specifically for My life and My future, are there for me to see every morning when I wake up, and every night before I go to bed!
According to Neuroscientist Dr Tanya Swart author of The Source, there is a science behind Vision Boards because the brain has a process called “Value Tagging”. She states “The brain assigns a higher “value” to images than written words on a “to-do” list, and the more you look at those images, the more those images move up in importance, and if you look at it right before you fall asleep every night, the images will imprint even further”
So start creating your version of Your life and Your future.
Step 1
Brainstorm and write down all the things you would like to manifest into your future – it might be a holiday, or just spending more time with family or friends.
Step 2
If you have access to magazines, then flick through and choose images that reflect what you’ve written down.
Alternatively – if you have access to a printer, then another tip is to search on Google Images for the word or phrase you’re looking for, and find an image that really resonates with you.
Step 3
Print/cut out and stick them to a big sheet of paper, or cork board and position it in a place where you think you’re most likely to look at it.
Accountability Partner
Do you have someone that you’re able to share your goals with?
If so, then I highly recommend you do this. It can be vital in helping you keep on track. This is because by telling someone what you plan to do, like changing a habit for example, you’re much more likely to stick to it.
If you have only made that commitment to yourself, there’s always the possibility you can talk yourself out of it and make excuses, but by adding another person into the mix, it really can help you to keep that motivation and you’re much less likely to “throw in the towel”.
Think about how often you’re going to check in with your accountability partner and how you plan to share your progress. WIll it be a quick email, a call or a weekly catch up. Also, think how great you’ll feel when you get to share your successes!
